Surgery canceled!

I started Bikram Toga in March at my wife’s urging to help get my legs stronger for a planned knee surgery in May. I have a torn ACL, and Miniscus in my right knee (and that is my good knee!). Everyone tells me the harder you work pre-op the faster and easier the recovery. I have been going to yoga 4 times a week.

I went to the pre-op physical yesterday, April 30, and the Orthopedist said my knee was fine, there was no more locking and that the surgery is no longer needed. So we canceled the surgery! Bikram yoga was my surgery preparation, now it is my surgery prevention! And I feel great too!

The Rabbit produces the opposite effect of the Camel, giving maximum longitudinal extension of the spine. As a result, it stretches the spine to permit the nervous system to receive proper nutrition. It also maintains the mobility and elasticity of the spine and back muscles. The Rabbit improves digestion and helps cure colds, sinus problems, and chronic tonsillitis. It has a wonderful effect on the thyroid and parathyroid glands. The pose improves flexibility of th scapula and the trapezius muscles. It’s very good for children as it helps them reach their full growth potential.

Because you can’t see yourself in the posture, it’s a good idea to get a mental image of what the posture looks like, and then try and copy the image. Remember that only about 30% or less body weight is in the head. Most of your weight is in your grip as you pull your heels, and at the same time, push against your feet.

If you feel like your body shape is not capable of doing the pose, don’t worry! Soon enough as your body starts to shift and change, the posture will come more naturally to you.

I've lost 18 pounds in 4 months.

My wife and I started practicing in the middle of December of 2011.

At that time I was 5’11” and 206 lbs. I could stretch forward and reach just above the middle of my shin with the tips of my fingers, and both of my knees were weak and injured.

In my first class I was quite sure that Garland (my first teacher) was friends with Satan, and that she was the attendant for the waiting room for hell. It was terribly hard. I couldn’t do fixed firm position or camel. Standing head to knee was more like bending over and not throwing up.

We have practiced (with the exception of the week of Christmas/New Years) 3 times a week, or if lucky 4 times.

By the end of January I could do fixed firm position (that is, my knees didn’t feel like they would explode), and I could touch my toes. Crazy.

By the end of February I could do all three elements of awkward position (and even got a little praise).

By the end of March I (unbelievably) lifted my heels off the ground in leg stretching.

Now, here it is the middle of April 2012, I’ve lost 18 pounds in 4 months (I’m still the same height). My knees feel great most days. I sleep like a child. I no longer think that any teacher is hell’s waiting room attendant. I drink a ton of water. I’m as healthy as I remember ever being. And overall, life is pretty good. I owe all of that, in so many ways, to practicing Bikram Yoga.

Camel Pose is one of the deepest backward bends in the series. It is also the great healer on the spine. In this time period, humans are spending way too much time forward bending. This causes many medical problems over time, including back pain. It’s extremely important that you are doing some backward bending each day to keep your spine healthy and happy.

“Nerves can, need, and are willing to stretch.” -Mary Jarvis

When you begin to stretch nerves and connective tissue, this can result in unusual sensations in the body. It’s normal to experience feeling lightheaded, or tingling sensations in the fingers and toes. It’s also normal for your hearing and eyesight to be mildly affected. Please know that this is only temporary, and will pass very quickly. Your nervous system will thank you!

The Camel stretches the abdominal organs to the maximum and cures constipation. It also stretches the throat, thyroid gland, and parathyroids. It opens the rib cage to give more space for the lungs. And because it produces maximum compression of the spine, it improves the flexibility of the neck and spine and relieves backache. It also firms and slims the abdomen and the waistline.

Our very own Marc Hocking and Kelly Duncan competed for Virginia; they are both first place Virginia champions. On Saturday for the semifinals, Marc placed 14th out of 47 male competitors. Kelly placed 7th out of 62 female competitors, landing her the opportunity to move on to Sunday’s finals. She did beautifully on Sunday as well and we are so proud of her. Thank you to everyone who tuned in this weekend. It is your support that inspires them and keeps them striving to do better each year. What the dialogue does not say is that half tortoise is very much like an inversion pose, which is why you feel very refreshed after doing this posture in class. This pose is a safe way to achieve similar medical benefits for your brain as with the postures where you go upside down, like a handstand. Your head elevation is below the heart, therefore high speed blood easily rushes to your brain, re-organizing, re-energizing, and re-vitalizing your brain cells.

Physically you are strengthening your shoulders and the muscles of the abdomen. You are also creating pressure build up in these areas as well as in the knees, ankles, and digestive system, improving circulation to those body parts.

To do half tortoise try your very best to keep your arms with your ears and your hips with your heels.. Once you’re all the way down, struggle equally to get your forehead to the floor and your hips to your heels. Also keep your arms very straight with your palms together and continuously stretch your arms throughout the pose.

This posture helps you to relax and makes you feel good. It will help you to improve your half moon pose and other shoulder opening postures as well. Enjoy!

I had done yoga once before and it wasn’t for me, too much laying around and relaxing! I’m a runner by nature so I was looking for an intense workout, but also something healing. My years of running had destroyed by hip and I was in constant pain. At the age of 40, I knew I needed to “fix” my body or I was going to end up with a mess. Lucky for me, I was addicted after my first day in the “torture chamber” (Bikram’s favorite term for the yoga room). I had never been so physically challenged in my life. Sweat was pouring off me like I was in the shower. My legs, shoulders, back; everything was so tight. I couldn’t believe how inflexible I was (years of running again!). I committed to Bikram yoga for a month wanting to give it a real chance to change my body. Boy did I love the results. A year and a half later my body, my mind, and my life have changed. I’ve reshaped my body, losing 20 pounds and gaining much needed muscle and flexibility. My mind is calmer, happier, and more stress free; things are “rolling off my back” like never before. Socially, I’ve made many new friends at the studio; people I would never have run into otherwise. Finally, I sold my business to become a yoga teacher. That was a major life change and I couldn’t have made a better decision. Not only do I love taking classes, but I love teaching them just as much. So, if you are looking for a mind, body, and life changing experience I dare you to try the hot room. You might get hooked like me!

Gradually I lost my allergies, my repetitive injuries went away, and I've postponed knee replacement surgery for 5 years through the practice.

It’s the way it makes me feel. My first introduction to Bikram Yoga was witnessing the transformation in my daughter Garland. Then, through that change my wife became interested and hooked. I was intrigued. I committed to go three times and see what all the hub-bub was about. I Walked out of the third class like I was walking on air and I have continued for three plus years. After 15 years of no exercise program it has been a personal struggle. My first impression was everyone was so nice. The practice didn’t hurt me like exercise had. Ninety minutes of me time was valuable to me and my relationships. Gradually I lost my allergies, my repetitive injuries went away, and I’ve postponed knee replacement surgery for 5 years through the practice. More important I’ve come to realize everyone who practices has the same story and belief in the spiritual and physical healing power of yoga. I’ve lost inches all over my body and I jokingly refer to myself as Titanium Tim now. I feel wonderful, strong, clear headed, and peaceful all at the same time. I look forward to the practice, which is amazing. I am thankful for my daughter and her wisdom and my wife and her example for me. I thank God daily for allowing me to participate in life again.

I had two stress fractures in my back, scoliosis, and a torn labrum. I did not expect the results that I got when I started taking Bikram classes.
I immediately noticed that my back pain started going away. After about 3 or 4 months of practicing daily, 95% of my back pain was gone. After 3 years my scoliosis improved dramatically. Not to mention all the mental benefits that I get from doing yoga.
In the fall of 2008 I went to the Bikram Yoga Teacher Training in Acapulco, Mexico. Since I graduated, I’ve taught all over the country, including Florida, Nevada, New Mexico, Massachusetts, Kentucky, and Virginia. I also enjoy training year round for the Yoga Asana Championships.
Bikram Yoga has a miraculous ability to help heal the human body and mind. I encourage all people, including athletes, to maintain a regular practice, to keep their bodies flexible, resilient, youthful, and free from pain.

At 25 I found myself (very) slowly recovering from hip surgery.

At 25 I found myself (very) slowly recovering from hip surgery. I first tried Bikram yoga several months after the surgery when I was still experiencing lots of pain, in physical therapy and having cortisone shots. The postures that I struggled with the most were eagle, triangle, toe stand, and wind removing pose but I felt like they were doing something.

I didn’t stick with the yoga at first due to conflicts with my work schedule, and I spend another 1.5 years in and out of physical therapy and getting additional cortisone shots. When I started regularly practicing about 4 years ago, I was still having frequent bouts of pain, very limited in physical activity other than swimming, and would go through phases where I continued to limp. Since I have been doing the yoga regularly my hip has improved dramatically. The level of pain that I experience is much less in intensity and flare ups have really shortened in duration. I can also participate in most activities or sports with the exception of running as long as I am doing the yoga also. Since I now compete and often demonstrate in front of others, people often ask me if I have always been so flexible. They seem disappointed when I say “yes”. I’ve always been flexible, but what I haven’t always been able to do is simple things like walk properly and make it through the day without fighting pain. For me this benefit is so much cooler than having dramatic before and after pictures.

Bikram Yoga is the perfect way to heal your body as long as you are patient and honest with yourself about your current abilities. Especially at first I was very careful not to push in the postures that I felt hip pain. Really focusing on the form of the posture and doing it correctly is important. It is definitely helpful to have instructors show you the proper form in the posture. Don’t make modifications to the posture, just don’t go into them as deeply. Let each instructor know that you have had a recent surgery, that way they won’t push you to go past your current limitations.
