Congratulations to our BYR students that competed in the VA/DC Yoga Championships on January 7, 2012. Everyone did a stunning demonstration of yoga and made us proud. A special congratulations to Marc Hocking and Kelly Duncan for winning first place for the men’s and women’s division for Virginia! Look for them at the National competition on March 3rd and 4th in New York City!
Yoga competitions have been taking place in India for many years and represent culture and tradition. In the past decade they have been introduced to the United States by Bikram Choudhury and his wife, Rajashree. In 2003, the first organized Yoga Asana Championship in the United States took place, and since then has continued to grow in popularity and become widely respected as a sport, art form and discipline. The goals of the Yoga Asana Championships are to educate a greater population on the health benefits of practicing yoga, to inspire more youth to practice, to unite yoga communities, and to make yoga an Olympic sport. More than 25 million people in the United States are practicing today. Once yoga is an Olympic sport, it will be even more accessible to people all over the world.
Participating in the Yoga Asana Championships is a great way to deepen your practice and become more involved in this life-changing discipline. Regardless of age or physical ability, everyone is invited to be a part of this amazing event. Just like in the beginning yoga class, your progress in the training and the championships has very little to do with physical ability, but is most affected by your determination and willingness to exceed your limitations. It is truly a path to self-realization!
